What does LPC Associate mean?

Updated: Sep 4, 2020

LPC Associates are therapists in the early stages of their career

LPC stands for Licensed Professional Counselor. An Associate has had extensive graduate school training. She* has a master’s degree and a license to practice issued by the state. The Intern license is a temporary license with some rules. The Associate must have an approved supervisor (which is almost like getting two therapists for the price of one!) and she must keep track of the time she spends seeing clients and getting additional education. LPC Associates cannot own their own practice or have payments made out specifically to them.

But LPC Interns can have specific qualifications, and skillfully use therapy techniques. She is using the time with her supervisor to grow and hone these skills to become even better at the great care she is already dispensing. The LPC Intern has a fresh perspective and may see options a more experienced counselor might miss.

But remember the key to good therapy:

Relationship, relationship, relationship

A quality relationship with your therapist is the most important aspect of creating the change you want.

Chose someone you click with, regardless of how long they have been in the field.

*I used the female pronoun because the majority of LPCs are female, but the are some totally awesome male LPCs out there too!
